The story of Colonial Lake

A lake with a neighborhood story

Colonial Lake began in 1924, when the Colonial Land Company dammed Shabakunk Creek. Water filled an area known as Steven’s Meadow, once part of the historic Thomas Stevens Farm.

The lake was originally planned as a swimming spot for the surrounding Colonial Lakelands neighborhood. That early purpose is part of its history; for today’s permitted activities, follow the current park signs.
